7 Divisions Played Out Finals at the Boys’ Football Allianz Coughlan Cup

Body:

The long-awaited finals day finally arrived for the 5th and 6th class boys of North East Wicklow on May 2nd. Following the disappointment of it’s cancellation the previous month due to weather conditions this was a day that many had been looking to for weeks and the buzz of excitement was palpable across the Bray Emmet’s venue.

Over 32 teams participated on the day and with 14 pitches fully occupied with matches all morning it is heartening to see the promotion and love of the game in our primary schools across the county.

Congratulations to St. Cronan’s Team 1 who were worthy winners of the Division 1 Allianz Coughlan Cup, narrowly edging out last year’s champions, St Kevin’s.

Newtown Team 1 were victorious in Division 2 taking home the inaugural O’Riordan Cup with a fine display of skill and team work. Gaelscol na gCloch Liath 1 claimed the runner’s up position in this division.

With close to 350 children playing across the 14 pitches this was a fantastic day for Gaelic Games in the county. Well done to all the children who competed and served up a truly magnificent feast of football!

Many thanks to Willie Braine for his very generous help and support in the setting up of pitches for the blitz. We are also very grateful to Bray Emmets for hosting the event and to the teacher volunteers who assisted in the refereeing of the matches and presentation of medals and trophies.
