Fantastic Day at Girls’ Football Finals
Day 2 of the Wicklow Times Shield Competition for Girls Football in 5th and 6th class took place in a sunny Bray Emmets GAA club on Thursday 20th March. After Day 1 of competition a fortnight ago, the final 3 rounds of competition were scheduled to take place on Day 2 followed by a series of finals across all 4 divisions. Thirty-one teams were in attendance coming from twenty-two different schools. The following schools participated: St Laurence’s, St Fergal’s, Newtownmountkennedy PS, Holy Rosary Wicklow Town, St Patrick’s Wicklow Town, Scoil na Coroine Mhuire Ashford, Kilmacanogue NS, Greystones CNS, Greystones ETNS, St Patrick’s Bray, Kilcoole PS, Ravenswell, St Peter’s, Nuns Cross, St Brigid’s Greystones, St Kevin’s, St Coen’s, Scoil Chualann, Gaelscoil na gCloch Liath, Gaelscoil Uí Chéadaigh and Gaelscoil Chill Mhantáin. Approximately 350 girls displayed their outstanding football skills across the games and finals that contributed to a great day of football.
Thirty-one teams were divided into four divisions. In each division we had a Cup final, Shield final, Plate final and the ‘A’ Final. The finals created great excitement amongst the teams with jubilation for the winners and disappointment for runners-up. However, each player and school should be very proud of their efforts. Division 1 teams contested the Wicklow Times Shield. Gaelscoil Uí Chéadaigh retained their title with a last-minute goal against Scoil Chualann in an all-Bray decider. In Division 2 the teams were competing for the innaugral Corn Uí Chréan Loinsigh. We were fortunate to have Sinéad Ní Chréan Loinsigh present to present the trophy that was named in her honour after many years of promoting Gaelic Games through Cumann na mBunscol. Gaelscoil na gCloch Liath were victorious in a tight encounter against Newtownmountkennedy PS. Division 3 teams were contesting the Corn Choirbín which was named in honour of Paraic Corbett and the many years he spent promoting ladies football in primary schools in County Wicklow. Again, we were fortunate to have Paraic there to present the cup too. Greystones ETNS beat Ravenswell in a close encounter. Finally, the Division 4 teams competed in the Corn Táiliúra named after local Olympian Katie Taylor. St Fergal’s NS were the winners in this division defeating Nuns Cross in another keenly contested final. Please see below for a full list of finals.
Thank you to Dave Barry and Bray Emmets GAA club for the continued support in hosting and arranging facilities for our Blitz days. We had a number of Transition Year students from Coláiste Chraobh Abhann and Temple Carrig Secondary School.
