On Wednesday the 6th of May, the Camogie Association along with Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Cill Mhantáin joined forces to host the a new, exciting initiative to promote camogie in the Garden County. The camogie participation day “Camán Try It”, took place in Ballinakill Centre of Excellence Rathdrum. The emphasis on the day was on participation and development of the skills of the game for all Wicklow Primary Schools in a non compeditive safe environment. Inclement weather conditions did not deter the schools from participating and did not put a dampener on what was a fantastic day of camogie. 8 schools attend the participation day these included: Scoil Chualann, Kilcoole, St. Brigid’s Greystones, Rathdrum, Carnew, Dunlavin and Sacred Heart Primary School Aughrim. Each school circulated to a number of different qualified coaches and practised the skills of the game in a fun, child centred way. The main skills covered were Grip/Ground Strick, Aerial Striking and Game Based activities focusing on hand passing and pick up. All levels of ability were catered for on the day, from beginners to advanced, all the girls were enthusiastic, cooperative and a pleasure to coach. A short, specifically tailored workshop was provided for all teachers by Eve Talbot, Regional Camogie Co-ordinator, Dublin/Wicklow, focusing on best practice in camogie and developing individual and team skills. Joan O Flynn, Ard Stúirthóir of the Camogie Association, and Eve Talbot placed great emphasis on encouraging the girls to join their local camogie clubs in Wicklow, highlighting how camogie contributes to the personal development of the whole child. Each school was presented with a certificate of attendance, a pack of sliotars, camogie boot bags for every girl and camogie merchandise. Each child also received a list of all camogie clubs within Wicklow and we hope that some of these girls will “Camán Try It” at club level.

Despite the weather conditions, the day was a fantastic success and this was testament to the diligent work and commitment of all involved. Míle Buíochas to the Camogie Association, Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Cill Mhantáin and all coaches,: Colm Gaskin, Garreth Doyle, Chris Sillery, James Murphy, Patrick Baker, Joan O Flynn CEO of the Camogie Association, Mary O Connor Director of Camogie Development and in particular Eve Talbot, who spearheaded the participation day. Thanks to Ballinakill Centre of Excellent for the use of their facilities and all teachers, parents and of course the children who took part. We look forward to your continued support over the coming months and we are looking forward to camogie continuing to flourish in the Garden County!
