Allianz Camogie Participation Day a Huge Success!

Body:

This year Allianz Cumann na mBunscol and the Camogie Association joined forces to run our now annual Camogie Participation Day. Ballinakill Centre of Excellence in Rathdrum played host to 8 teams from all over Wicklow. These teams included: Rathcoyle Primary School, Scoil Chualann, Gaelscoil Chill Mhantáin, Coolfancy Primary School, Aughrim National School, Our Lady’s School Rathdrum, Carnew Primary School and Kilcoole Primary School. Schools were divided up into different groups with each rotating between several coaches at different stations. The emphasis on the day was developing the girls’ level of skill and then implementing these skills in non-competitive mini games. The main skills covered were Grip/Ground Strike, Aerial Striking and Game Based activities focusing on hand passing and pick up. All levels of ability were catered for on the day, from beginners to advanced, all the girls were enthusiastic, cooperative and pleasure to coach. A short, specifically tailored workshop was provided for all teachers by Eve Talbot, Regional Camogie Co-ordinator, Dublin/Wicklow, focusing on best practice in camogie and developing individual and team skills. A presentation of a set of sliotars and camogie merchandise was presented to each school at the end of the day. Each child also received a list of all camogie clubs within Wicklow and we hope that some of these girls will “Camán and Try It” at club level.

The day was a fantastic success and this was testament to the diligent work and commitment of all involved. Many thanks to the Camogie Association, Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Cill Mhantáin, the GDAs and all coaches: Colm Gaskin, Garrett Doyle, Leighton Glynn, Patrick Baker, Fiona O Sullivan, Mossy Gaskin and in particular Eve Talbot, who spearheaded the participation day. Thanks to Ballinakill Centre of Excellence for the use of their facilities and all teachers, parents and of course the children who took part. We look forward to your continued support over the coming months and we are looking forward to camogie continuing to flourish in the Garden County!
